“I thought it was an overly simplistic portrayal of college students as nothing more than the product of outsider's constructions. It's interesting from a post-modernist perspective, but Wolfe doesn't really nail the cadence or vocabulary of collegiate wannabes looking for acceptance, which was really distracting for me as a reader. I found some of the plot devices interesting, but I never really bought that these characters were real (but then again, Wolfe was making the case that his characters aren't moored to a distinctly individual identity, so maybe what I'm viewing as a failure is actually a triumph. who knows).”
