This is one of my all-time favorite "Design Inspirational" books. My good friend Anton gave it to me a few years ago. There's a fantastic variety of different styles represented in the book. Also, the format is really nice to experience—the plastic textured cover with the foam JPG icon on the front. It's a terrific book that I've thoroughly enjoyed.

Contains some mildly entertaining anecdotes on painting and general rules of rockstardom. The latest edition, which is the one I have, is a little crappy. I wish they'd produce a version with a little more character.

Whoa Nelly, this one is crazy! I found myself laughing out loud at a lot of Dalí's notes here. The disturbing thing though is that I really got a sense that he was entirely focussed and serious when writing a lot of these crazy observations/dissertations. That said, it's a ton of fun to read and was an excellent insight into the mind of a (crazy?) genius.

I'm a sucker for anything penned by Lorca. His poems have a real visceral appeal—I can smell oranges, the sea, and I can hear the noise of Manhattan from 50 years ago. And on and on. Yeah, I love it. It's always a fun time comparing the english translation to spanish too.

I've started this book 3 or 4 times over the years. I just can't get past a hundred pages before I realize I don't know what's going on. I suppose my brain isn't ready for this one. I really love Hesse's other (shorter) works.

  • Under the Roofs of Paris (Miller, Henry)

This book is the perfect book to play the "Henry Miller Dirty Word" game. Here's how it works:
    1. Select an assistant (a friend, that pretty girl in front of you, whomever). Instruct them to randomly say "Stop!" as you fan through the book from cover to cover.

    2. Once you've arrived on your "random" page, you'll use your finger to "randomly scan the text without looking. Instruct your assistant to say "Stop!" when they're satisfied—they shouldn't be looking close enough to read as you scan.

    3. Ok, now your finger is hopefully on a word. If you start reading at a normal pace aloud, within the first 10-15 seconds, you'll no doubt come across some four-letter words like prick, dong, pussy, etc.

Yes, it's a little corny, but could elicit a few smiles if it's done right. Have fun!
