    Arboretum

    by David Byrne
    • Rated 3 stars

I'm a huge fan of David Byrne (except Talking Heads). Let's just say I think the guy has a "Grade A" mind. The concept of this book is so nice, simple, and a testament to his healthy brain. I wish there was a bit of variation though. Possibly some commentary on when/where he was while drawing certain graphs. The production and design of the book is fantastic too!

In my opinion, this book is a product of a big conference room full of people trying to put something together on the subject of information graphics without any passion or real purpose. It's not a favorite of mine.

Terrific resource and a well-constructed softcover. Taschen books are always a pleasure to flip though!

Pure poetry. One of the greatest titles I've ever seen as well.

I spent an afternoon reading and looking at these bug pictures while listening to the accompanying CD. I really like the book, it's interesting and quirky, but I guarantee you will go mad if you listen to the entire CD! Seriously speaking, I wish the producer of the CD would have excluded the commentary on the disc—I would much rather have nothing but insect sounds with a reference in the book.

    Otherwise, an interesting project!

This book was instrumental for me in learning portuguese. Highly recommended.

    The Brazilians

    by Joseph A. Page
    • Rated 5 stars

This book has interesting historical and cultural perspectives on how Brazilians became "Brazilian."

Page's objective analysis of Brazilian culture doesn't give way to the man that fell in love with Brazil (which I thought was fantastic). There's something infectious about this country that only someone who has lived there for a good amount of time can truly understand, I think Page's narrative attempts to capture this feeling.

    An excellent read!

  • Beneath the Underdog : His World As Composed by Mingus
    • Rated 3 stars

I was very anxious to read Charles Mingus' autobiography—I'm a huge fan of his. The book, however, was a little disappointing. though I did enjoy reading about many of the "non-musical" aspects of his life, I thought his focus on how he was a pimp and all this crap was a little heavy. I don't disagree with him on including this, I just felt like he talked about it WAY too much.

That aside, his perspectives on race relations in the US was interesting. The portraits he paints of his friends is also very intimate and honest.

I suppose the best part of this book is how we actually get a sense of his personality—both heated and passionate to gentle (and passionate). Mingus was a man passionate about the way he played music, how he wrote music, the women he loved, politics, and many other aspects of his life. There is something to be said of a man like this—an artist first, a musician second. This book takes the reader through what it took to build a man like Mingus.

I lusted after this two volume set for months. Back then I couldn't come close to buying them. That same year, my father gave me the first edition set for Christmas (and my birthday, which is the day after Christmas, heh). Anyhow, the book is intensely beautiful and vastly comprehensive in representing his paintings.
