There's nothing better for me than going used book shopping. Thrift stores, Goodwill, yard sales, used bookstores, you name it. I've loved reading ever since elementary school when I would order books from the "Weekly Reader." Aaah...the good ole days!

I have a pretty wide range of interests...love fiction, horror, young adult, and... more »

Hated it. Was a complete waste of time. Maybe it was just above me, but I had a really hard time keeping up...hard time staying interested....hard time making myself read it. Typically, I"ll give a book up to page 100 before I give up on it, but I really wanted to like this one. It just never happened.

Unlike anything I've ever read before. I would definitely recommend this one, but I'll warn you that it's a pretty indepth task, reading this book. There are footnotes for footnotes of footnotes. And there's letter decoding. BUT it's a great read and something you'll not soon forget, guaranteed!

I know I'm putting myself in the minority by saying this, but I LOVED this book...moreso than Twilight! I'm not necessarily a Jacob or an Edward fan at this point, but for some reason the story just seemed better to me...more fast paced and I wanted to find out what was going to happen next. Also, the writing was better. Can't wait to read the 3rd one now!

What a beautiful story! I fell in love with the book early on. My only complaint is the ending...I feel like Krauss could've done a better job tying up all the loose ends. The different stories became a bit confusing and I just felt like the way Krauss chose to end the book did not bring about a satisfactory resolution. Other than that I would highly recommend this one...even added it to my favorites.

Inspiring story, but I found it very boring. I felt like the author just repeated herself over and over to the point that it sounded ...almost whiney.

So bad I couldn't finish...Perhaps it's just not my genre, but I couldn't even make it through the first chapter. I had to restart the first chapter 4 times and even after I really tried to concentrate I just couldn't grasp what Smith was talking about. I normally don't give up a book this early on, but I could just tell it wasn't for me.

Wow...I am so torn about this book. First off, let me just say that Carson McCullers is a wonderful writer. I really liked the beginning of the book and the tone that was conveyed. It felt ominous; like something bad was about to happen. And it had a feeling of despair, loneliness, and just sadness. She is a master (err..mistress?) at conveying those tones/feelings/senses. But somewhere in the middle it started dragging for me. And it took me a really long time to get through...But toward the end I started liking it again (probably 70-80 pages toward the end). However, I was not thrilled with the ending. I think I understand why she ended the way she did. Throughout the whole novel McCullers was very ambiguous in regards to how she told certain parts of the story. It made me think for myself and come to my own conclusions. She also has a way of saying things without coming out to say them....so that when you figure out what the meaning is of something you've you read you're like "oh...they must've done this/that then?"

I did some research on Carson McCullers and she's interesting to me because a lot of the issues she dealt with shows up in her writing...ex. ambiguity, sexuality, etc..

So, with that said, I have not given this book a rating, because I just couldn't decide on what to give it. Part of me really, really liked it overall, but then part of me is torn on what to think about it. So, my suggestion is to read it yourself. My advice is to keep an open mind, be ready to tackle a book that isn't an action packed page turner (and maybe even a little boring at times-but stick with it!), and prepare yourself emotionally (because this book will make you sad, but it'll also make you think...a lot).

Until a coworker read this a couple of months ago I had no desire to read it myself. After she raved about it I thought I'd give it a try. I am thoroughly impressed, so much so that this is now one of my top 3 favorite books of all time. I loved Melanie!... for her strength, her selflessness, and her thoughtfulness. And until the last few chapters I really liked Rhett as well. Some of the dialogue between he and Scarlett literally made me laugh out loud. This is some great writing!

Amazing Book! I work in a bookstore, and I just happened upon it while putting some books away. The title was what caught my eye. It's a short children's hardcover picture book so I was able to read it very quickly. As an art therapist, this book made me so excited. There are so many good messages within this book and it's given me some ideas on new interventions to do with, not only kids, but adults! A simple book with a very strong message. Can't wait to use it!

What a good book! It's true-it's depressing, but it was so well written and such a good story. I read in one review that the main character in the book is hard to care about, but I strongly disagree. I felt very connected to the main character as well as her family who are trying to make it through an extremely difficult time following a traumatic car accident. It forces one to ponder pain, suffering, hurt, and guilt, and how he/she would cope with those strong feelings and emotions in similar situations. I deem this a must-read.
