There's nothing better for me than going used book shopping. Thrift stores, Goodwill, yard sales, used bookstores, you name it. I've loved reading ever since elementary school when I would order books from the "Weekly Reader." Aaah...the good ole days!

I have a pretty wide range of interests...love fiction, horror, young adult, and... more »

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Stepped Out of the Window and Disappeared

Starts out well but eventually becomes preposterously tedious.

I'd heard enough about this book to have it on my reading list and, at the same time, to be reluctant to read it. Several years later now, I've finally taken the plunge. It is a beautifully written novel. Little Bee's narrative voice is exquisite. She is honest and good and true. Her story is painful but she has a view and tale of the world that will leave you breathless. I read with trepidation until I hit this part: "On the girl's brown legs there were many small white scars. I was thinking, Do the scars cover the whole of you, like the stars and the moons on your dress? I thought that would be pretty, too, and I ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly. That is what the scar makers want us to think. But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived." I trusted Little Bee enough to open my eyes and ears and heart to hear her story. Everyone should.

3.5 stars. This book is about a house party thrown for the Earl of Briarly so that he may find a wife. His sister makes a list of potential brides and invites many in order to disguise it as a party. The book is split into three separate stories that take place during the house party. They were all good, though I prefer Miss James' story. This was a light and relaxing read.
