  • The Becoming

    The Becoming

    by Jeanne C. Stein
    • Rated 3 stars

As the first in the series, The Becoming is definitely interesting enough to continue forward. I found that some of the character's stories were more interesting to me than Anna's, but I'm thinking this is because Anna is supporting all of the books whereas other characters were developed strictly for this tale. Looking forward to more gritty bounty hunting and vampire butt-kicking since this was mostly introduction and induction for Anna into the vampire world.

Eden Moore is haunted. Haunted by her past, haunted by the secrets surrounding her family heritage, and haunted by ghosts that only she can see. From early childhood, Eden has seen the ghosts of three sisters. It is their story and the way it intertwines with that of Eden herself that are the driving force of this story.

Great in every way! Priest is an amazing storyteller and I'm so glad that there are more Eden Moore tales to follow this one.

When Briar Wilkes's son goes over the wall in search of a way of restoring his father's good name, Briar has no choice but to follow and try to save him. See, it was Briar's husband, Leviticus Blue, who was responsible for tearing up the earth and releasing the gas called the Blight, a yellow gas that causes rot and decay and eventually a walking death. Armed with a rifle, her father's old badge, and a gas mask, Briar will find a way over the wall to search for her missing son.

    Little Face

    by Sophie Hannah
    • Rated 4 stars

No one believes new mother Alice Fancourt when she says that her baby is not hers. But when Alice and the baby both go missing the following week, everyone finally starts to pay attention.

I enjoyed the style of this title -- not only is it very reminiscent of Ruth Rendell and Minette Walters, but the author uses two different time settings to tell her tale. Alice's story takes place around the alleged baby swap and her attempts to get police involved. The majority of the remainder of the story is told from the perspective of Simon Waterhouse, an investigator called in on the first case who subsequently becomes the lead in the investigation into Alice's disappearance.

Waterhouse and his boss, Charlie Zailer, have become something of a series since this first thriller from Hannah.

After a fire that results in the death of a young man, Luce is sent to Sword & Cross, a reform school for troublesome teens. She is immediately drawn to Daniel Grigori, a mysterious boy who is outright rude to her on a regular basis. In spite of that, she gets the feeling that they have met somewhere before. Unbeknownst to Luce, she and Daniel are tied to each other in a way that will soon become abundantly clear. But will history repeat itself?

Fallen is the latest fallen angel title for teens. I thought it started off great. Loved the atmosphere and the way the story developed, but I thought the ending was much too rushed.

As Jake Riley's private sector venture takes off, he and his partner are faced with their toughest challenge yet: tracking down the kidnappers responsible for taking a scientist's daughter in hopes of getting their hands on dangerous information. Meanwhile, Agent Kelly Jones is on the case when an Arizona senator is murdered. It looks as though the people responsible could be a gang of immigrants, but the evidence is just a little too convenient.

A very timely topic and an interesting premise. Readers will be dying to know what will come next for Jones and Riley after this ending.

Kinsey has been hired for a one day case, tracking down a burial site only hazily remembered by a 27-year-old who believes he may have seen something 21 years ago. The dig turns up the body of a dog rather than the missing child suspected to have been there, but Kinsey can't let things rest and continues to dig in spite of continued questions about the credibility of her client.

I wasn't sure about this one at first. The flashback scenes seemed disconnected (of course) until more of the story came to light. After that, though, satisfyingly great as usual for Grafton and Kinsey.

  • Murder on the Cliffs: A Daphne du Maurier Mystery (Daphne du Maurier Mysteries)

An interesting mystery starring Daphne du Maurier as sleuth. Good stuff! Readers who enjoy du Maurier's work, especially Rebecca, will appreciate seeing the author as the character in Joanna Challis's debut mystery.

While on vacation Daphne du Maurier, aspiring writer, stumbles upon the body of a dead girl. Curiosity piqued, Daphne decides that she must be part of the investigation and proceeds to learn all she can about the various players in hopes of solving the case.
