The first in the Emma Streat series is a surprisingly different read than one would initially expect.

Emma's husband had been rather jumpy lately, and after a trip to London that is preceded by one of his office's visitors being murdered in an airport, Emma and hubby return home only for him to be murdered. It appears initially to be a hit-and-run accident, but a note regarding one of his coworkers prompts Emma to dig into his death. What she finds is a web of intrigue involving spies, dangerous weapons developments, and state secrets.

    Magic to the Bone

    by Devon Monk
    • Rated 3 stars

Alllie Beckstrom is a Hound -- someone responsible for tracking down and identifying the illegal offloading of magic. When a job leads her straight to her father, a prominent figure who has made a business out of magic, she soon finds herself being hunted and threatened. And when her father ends up dead, with her own signature pointing a finger as her as the killer, Allie knows that she will have to use all of the power available to her to figure out what is going on.

An ok read. I think the follow-up titles in the series will really be great, but Magic to the Bone had a lot of information to absorb as the first in a story that has some very different things going on as compared to other urban fantasy titles out there. An interesting read.

    Stuff to Spy For

    by Don Bruns
    • Rated 3 stars

Skip and James are back in this third outing of the Stuff series. This time, Skip has a huge contract installing a new security system with a local company -- a legit job. Or not. The woman who hires Skip is having an affair with her boss and wants him to be her fake boyfriend for the sake of the man's wife. She promises him a huge bonus on top of his portion of the cost to install the system. How could he say no?

Like all of Skip and James's schemes, nothing goes as planned. Funny and light.

  • Xombies

17-year-old Lulu Pangloss may be the last uninfected woman on earth. A zombie outbreak, or xombie as it's being called thanks to the infection starting in women, has spread into an epidemic. With the help of the man Lulu thinks might be her father, she is allowed to board a nuclear sub headed for Lord knows where. The ship's crew is made up of a limited number of soldiers, boys, and Lulu, who proves herself to be quite resourceful.

A pretty good zombie read. Some of the actual infection stuff lost me a bit or got a tad hokey, possibly in an attempt to be different from the other stuff out there. The story itself was a good read, though, overall.

1980's horror from the author of The Howling. A fast horror read.

Joana was lucky to survive the drowning. But she didn't really. She died and came back. And the other side wants her to return. Four walkers will come for her. Can she survive them or will she return to death?

  • Shutter Island
    • Rated 4 stars

    Excellent thriller!

US Marshall Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck Aule have been sent to Shutter Island to investigate the escape of one of its prisoners. Shutter Island is home to the notorious Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. The most violent offenders are housed here and there is virtually no way off the island itself. Teddy knows that Shutter Island is hiding something big, though, and he's going to be the one to uncover it.

  • A twisted ladder

Madeleine LeBlanc specializes in schizophrenia. This is thanks to growing up with a father suffering from the disorder. Now, though, Madeleine will have to rethink her theories when she begins to see her own "River Devil."

Cryptic description, I know. There's so much going on in this book -- it's a fantastic read that's hard to sum up. Southern gothic feel and setting. Highly recommended.

  • In Their Blood

    by Sharon Potts
    • Rated 4 stars

When Jeremy and Elise's parents are murdered, the young adults are faced with the fallout of losing their parents. Jeremy, now in his 20s, has been shirking any and all responsibility for some time now. When he finds out that he is his sister's guardian, he vows to change his ways and be there for the teen. He is also determined to find out why his parents were murdered.

The book has a pretty great pacing for a mystery. While it seemed that the solution was being set up for a while, it also seemed to me that the big reveal was a bit too quickly done. Blink and you missed it. Otherwise a pretty good mystery read.

    THE FOG.

A fun read if not one of Herbert's best.

A rift opens releasing yellow fog into the air. As it travels across England, everyone in its wake experiences a terrible madness.

  • The Book of Illumination: A Novel from the Ghost Files

The Book of Illumination: A Novel from the Ghost Files

by Mary Ann Winkowski, Maureen Foley
    • Rated 4 stars

A lighter mystery with a paranormal twist.

Anza O'Malley can see and speak to the dead. It is this, combined with her book binding training, that gets her a reference to the Anathaeum in Boston where books from a recently deceased man's estate have been donated and are being restored. One book in particular seems to have come with its very own ghosts. Furthermore, the book in question is a rare and valuable text that goes missing before Anza can placate the spirits.

A very enjoyable read with just the right amount of suspense.
