Most entertaining and inspiring book I've read in a while. I loved Joan.

Such a great story. Mostly, I'm amazed at how the author took a seriously-sad topic and achieved a respectfully light-hearted tone overall.

I had such high hopes that I would love this book! I was disappointed in the way the characters were so slowly developed and the pacing of the secrets revealed in the story was excruciatingly slow. I have no experience editing, but from a reader's perspective, I would have cut at least 150 pages of this 560 page book. Some scenes and details seemed unnecessary and strung the story out in an unfulfilling way. In the end, I still liked the book, because I liked the overall story and the way it ended.

I don't doubt the worthiness of this novel in receiving the Orange Prize, but I didn't personally like the majority of the way the story was told. I found the reporting of events through a journal format somewhat dry. Thankfully the whole book wasn't told in this fashion, but much of it was. The jems in the book for me were everything including Frida Kahlo and the conversations between her and Harrison. I liked the conclusion of the story, but overall I didn't enjoy this one.

Nicole Seitz has become my favorite "Christian Fiction" writer. I find no hint of "preachiness" in her books--that tends to turn me off from this genre in general. To me her storytelling is artistic, creative, and soulful. This novel keeps you guessing until the end through a series of flashbacks and several main characters' perspectives. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

I enjoyed this book until about the halfway mark. I couldn't finish it. The momentum of the story dropped off and I lost interest.

Carol Shields’writing makes me smile. I caught myself several times reading this book with a big smile on my face. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of in this novel was how she structured each chapter with a review of previous chapters. It was like she intended to make each chapter function as a short story apart from the whole. Became too redundant for me.

I'm not even finished with this one yet, but I've added it to my top 10 list. This is a must read for anyone wanting to know more about the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Beautifully written and thoroughly educational. Story and fact are expertly woven together to create an inspiring experience.

Everyone needs to read this book. Paints a clear picture of the heart of God for the "orphan, the widow and the alien" and offers practical ways that we can serve these precious people he loves.

This book felt like a bad dream--dark, confusing and full of meaning unknown to me! This is my first Flannery O'Connor read and I'm going to have to take a while to process. I liked it in a weird way that feels a lot like dislike.
