I'm a recent college graduate who loves books. I devour them so fast I sometimes have a hard time remembering what I have read. Right now I am at a point where I'm reading mostly fiction and memoirs. Throughout college I read more non-fiction, poetry, and classics. I'll get back into more... more »

I liked this book better than its predecessor, perhaps because it was from a woman's perspective? There were parts, however, that I thought Mr. Duncan could not relate to as a male writer, but on the other hand, there were issues (like that of rape and motherhood) that I think he handled well. I liked that Talulla wasn't instantaneously in love with her children the moment they arrived. It seemed to be a survival mechanism and she proved she is all about survival - perhaps even more than Jake was (in a shorter amount of time, no less). And I liked the pack mentality, whereas Jake was a lonely old wolf. I'm assuming there is going to be a third book and this time, I'm actually looking forward to it.

While I understand this is an example of quality literature, I just couldn't get behind it. The characters were excellently thought out, none were perfect, but to me, none were even likeable. The circumstances weren't true to my life story and I couldn't relate to the timeline of the early '80s. I think that the book could have been shorter, but it was interesting to hear the perspective from all three of the main characters (who left out what, who thought what was important, etc.) All in all, I am hoping that Middlesex will be a more enjoyable read. This one took me far too long.

All I have to say is thank goodness the main character got amnesia between books 2 and 3 because I did too. I am just reading this series to finish it up. Have I mentioned before how much I hate the name PATCH for a main character? Why do I do this to myself?

Everyone kept saying this book was creepy, and it was, but I guess I wasn't reading it from a kid's perspective. It wasn't my favorite story by Gaiman. It was a quick read, though.

I had seen the play years ago but reading the story was far more enjoyable. I thought it could be longer, but all in all I really liked it.

There were parts of this book that were heart-wrenching for me as a young wife. I couldn't help but think, "God, I hope it is not like this when I am 45." I was so sad for all of the characters involved. The main character was lost, but she was also really neglecting some other relationships in her life. On one hand, I wanted her to experience the joy of falling in love with a new person and on the other I wanted her to rekindle what she had with her husband. About half-way through the book I figured it out and then I started reading it for the reveal. I did not like that the list of questions was at the end. I was too lazy to go back through all I had read and re-read the main character's responses. I don't know if I would recommend this book to a serious reader.

I read this book for my local book club in honor of Earth Day. While I understand the importance of the book, Rachel Carson, and her work, it was a very tedious read. I think that it was the hardest book for me to get through since I graduated college. There were many valid points, but I felt many were redundant. I have admired Ms. Carson for some time, so I challenged myself to read the text as critically as possible, rather than become another acolyte. When she brought up the Eskimos who went in for surgery in Anchorage and were only "rewarded by ingesting food tainted by poison" at the hospitals I felt it was an over-reacting. We do not know if those surgeries were life saving and I would eat food once with trace amounts of DDT in it if it meant it would improve my quality of life in the long run. Our book group had a great discussion. It is interesting as to how applicable the book is today. I really didn't enjoy reading it though. I would have given it a lower rating if it wasn't written so beautifully.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an ultimately uplifting read. The meaning behind flowers was interesting and if I had more time I would have liked to look up each flower to see what they looked like.

This was one of the more enjoyable books in the series for me. There was a surprise that I didn't catch, and I thoroughly enjoyed being surprised. I have some suspicions about some characters and how things may play out (Swopes), so I am looking forward to the next book.

Parts of this book were really predictable. Other parts weren't as predictable, but there was no jaw-dropping surprise. It was okay.
