I am a single female, 54 years old. I have been retired now for almost 3 years. I worked for 33 years for the Social Security Administration. I left while I still had my sanity, or at least most of it. I have been reading for as long as I can remember. I love books, along with cats and dogs, and my boyfriend Bob. My cat is Chester. This book just went on and on and on....and not in a good way! The characters felt fake to me, like card board cutouts. I thought the story line was boring. I had about 100 pages to go and skipped ahead to the end because I was wondering who Greenie ended up with and dreaded reading more! So I found out about the 9/11 connection. Even that event did not come across as very interesting in this book. Very little emotion evoked by it.

    High catholic melodrama.

I liked this book a lot. This is my second time reading it. I wanted to reread it because Charles Taylor has been in the news recently. I think it's interesting how the author mixed fiction with fact. I'm sometimes skeptical of one sex writing a first person narative of the opposite sex but he did a good job.

For years I've said I'd buy a dictionary and keep it with whatever book I'm reading and look up the words I don't know. And now, I've finally done it. Mine's red, though!

This was highly recommended but I was disappointed. I find I often struggle with books that jump from one character to another in each chapter which this does. These people were for the most part unlikable. I didn't even cry when the cat died and I always cry when a pet dies in a book! She is a good writer although I would say she tended to over-write this. The 9/11 angle was interesting.

I couldn't get into this. I should have read it 30 years ago when it wasn't quite so old. It's been on my shelf for probably that long! My cover is different than this one.

I love this book. I'm so glad Oprah chose it for this summer's read as it prodded me to reread it. Great writing, a great story, and a very interesting subject, one you don't read about everyday.

I agree with bookdreamer. I tried reading this last winter and couldn't get into it. I sure didn't make it even 1/3 of the way! I thought I'd try it again but I still don't like it. I'm putting it back on my shelf, though; maye I will try one more time. Like when it's that last book left on the face of the earth I haven't read.
