I am a single female, 54 years old. I have been retired now for almost 3 years. I worked for 33 years for the Social Security Administration. I left while I still had my sanity, or at least most of it. I have been reading for as long as I can remember. I love books, along with cats and dogs, and my boyfriend Bob. My cat is Chester. I love beading as well, though I haven't been doing it for very long; maybe two years now. And I don't get to bead as often as I would like to.

I noticed that you had Alice Koller's "An Unknown Woman" on your shelf. That is my favorite book and I've read it several times.

I have four cats, but no dogs. Maybe one day, though. I miss having a dog.

Hi. Thanks for the response. I was able to open your whole profile today and see that you are also interested in politics. Too bad we aren't neighbors because it sounds like we have a lot in commom and it would be nice to have someone to have walks with and discuss the state of the world! Exercise would be more fun if I had someone to do it with. I recently got active again by attending my local caucus and was a delegate to my county and district conventions. I have only done that once before several years ago. It's an interesting experience and only reinforces that the squeaky wheel gets sthe grease. If you don't speak up for yourself others will speak for you. I could also tell that those already in the party had worked together in the past and would support each other making it harder for new blood to get elected to any positions. I was also very struck by how is seems that the more attractive candidate usually wins and I think that that speaks to something in our human nature that we have to make a conscious attempt to override.
If I had a neighbor to quilt or bead with I would get around to that more as well. Having a creative outlet is somehow self-affirming. I enjoy making the beaded bookmarks for friends. I added more books to my shelfari bookshelf last night and this morning. I rated and gave a short review to most of them and would recommend most of them quite highly. Happy reading.

Hello beadology, thanks for asking me to be your friend, and I happily accept. Any cat lover is a friend of mine! I'm not a beader however - my passion is linedancing, which I'm off to in a few minutes, so I'll be back on Shelfari tonight, Oz time. Will put up a profile and a pic soon. Cheers, Valerie Z

Thanks for adding me to your list of friends. I look forward to looking at your list of books as we seem to have a lot in common except that I live in Texas where it is a bit warmer. I just added "The Soul Thief" to my to be read list so look forward to my first Charles Baxter book.

HI, and welcome to Shelfari. I was intrigued by The Darling - I think I wrote a review if you look on my shelf. I read it around the time I read Long Way Gone, also about African war. The pair opened my eyes to the strife in that part of the world. The Darling was also an interesting character study, of a woman shaped by her time and her personality.

Sorry I took so long to see your question about The History of Love. Unfortunately, I don't remember the incident about the key. I hope you enjoyed the book better the second time around!

Hi, the Stone Reader documentary was really good, it made me want to read a lot. It's kind of a mystery story as he tries to track down this writer. Unfortunately, he made Stones of Summer sound great, but I guess everyone has their own "epiphany" book and that was his (definitely not mine).
