  • When Nothing Else Matters: Michael Jordan's Last Comeback

Very interesting, narrative-driven account of MJ's final comeback with the Wizards. I grew somewhat weary, however, of Leahy's apparent disdain for Jordan, especially in his dealings with the media. Much of the tone of the book is very negative and condemning. As a member of the sports media, I can understand the sort of tension that builds between athletes and the press, however there is a mental barrier that must be surpassed in order to truly appreciate the unique nature of covering sports. Leahy seems to hold a grudge against Jordan, which informs much of his commentary about the comeback and sometimes makes for paragraphs of rants about the nature of sports media in general. A journalist cannot paint an entirely accurate portrait of a person or a situation when such a grudge is held.

All in all, I enjoyed the stories in the book. Even as a life-long admirer of Michael Jordan, I enjoyed the lesser-known and somewhat unflattering anecdotes about the man. I do believe though that the portrait could have been better depicted if Leahy had removed himself from the situation a bit more.

This is a riveting and insightful account of the Cheney vice presidency. A great piece of objective and in-depth journalism. Any aspiring journalist should read Gellman's work as an example of adequate research and reporting. Incredible book.

A wonderfully poetic, beautifully arrogant, and perfectly humble account of a man's encounter with a landscape seldom experienced. One of the best I've ever read.

Long. Interesting. Outlandish. Heartfelt. This just about describes it in a nutshell for me. May elaborate sometime.

Roach delivers an extremely entertaining look at a topic that is a bit of a taboo in our society. There are a few moments during the book where I wish Roach would tone down her signature sarcasm just a bit; it seemed in a few instances to be gratuitous. That being said, the anecdotes were very interesting and informative, written with a mostly respectable magazine-journalism gate. Recommended for sure.

Jose Saramago is easily one of the greatest novelists of modern time. Beautiful and engulfing story.

The power of this novel extends beyond the pages of the book. For weeks afterwards, you'll be thinking about the importance of the story. Beautifully written and translated.
