“I find it both ironic and sad that David Sedaris' books most often end up in the "Humor" section of major book retailers--right next to Jeff Foxworthy and VanWilder's Guide to College. Perhaps most readers are too shallow to pick up on the deeper, reflective tones in Sedaris' writing. Or maybe we just want to be entertained instead of moved. Either way, pretending that David Sedaris is nothing more than a humorist is to deny the world one of its greatest essayists.
The beauty of Sedaris is his simplicity. You'll never have to re-read a Sedaris sentence or ask yourself "What did he mean...?" This is clear, crisp writing at its finest. The humor, depth, and humanity seep through naturally, not forcibly. To read Sedaris is to experience a great literary pleasure. ”
