Batona

I am a husband, father, teacher, blogger, and geocacher. I am a reader. I am again beginning to chronicle my books. Learning from past mistakes, I am taking it slowly.

Enjoy the process as I document the 1000+ books we have sitting around.

The reading levels I post for the books are taken from Follett. They aren't perfect,... more »

Sandra Boynton is well liked in our family. This board board presents counting. Fritz enjoyed the rhythm of the book. Boynton's illustrations are wonderful.

This is a book that will be read numerous times with Fritz.

This is a quick read and something that would be good to introduce antonyms to students.

Fritz enjoyed Curious George and likes holding the board book.

Dr. Seuss is welcomed, even when he becomes political. This tale of the Once-ler, who desires Truffula trees, meeting the Lorax, who speaks for the trees.

Despite the political message, it is a well-constructed story. There is the expected silliness and rhymes that are the hallmarks of Dr. Seuss.

Seuss leaves the reader with an upbeat ending.

Eh, it's okay. I would not have spent money on this book. It has sing-song lines (chitter-chitter-chatter, quitter-quatter, etc.). It's a fine read, but do not go out of your way to obtain a copy, which is now out of print.

There's always time for the classics here in our household.

I read to my son each night while he takes his bottle and falls asleep. I used to do the same for my daughter. Somehow our routine changed and I rarely read to her anymore. :( I said we needed to change that. She came in and joined her brother and me. The three of us were cramped in the chair, but it was definitely fun.

Beetle wanted to read this tonight. I believe she has read it recently at school. Ah, The Cat in the Hat. There's not much to say about this classic. I do like the fish, the only practical character in the tale.

Beetle hooted throughout and Fritz seemed to enjoy his first ride through this fabulous, tongue-twisting (not too bad), madcap adventure.

  • See The Sea!: A Book About Colors (Googly Eyes)
    • Rated 4 stars

Another bad request. Tags: board book, fiction, ocean, colors

I always liked this book. I purchased this from a Books Are Fun representative who was clearing out some overstock. Gert alerted me to this sale and we went over to this lady's house. Her driveway was filled with thousands of books. As I recall, we were a bit short of cash that day, but I came up with a whole dollar for this book.

There are two large plastic eyes that pop out of the book. Each page incorporates the eyes in the different ocean creatures that show up.

The book concentrates on colors. Beetle learned her colors early. Perhaps that was in part to this book.

Tonight I read this with Fritz. He wasn't as interested in it as I had hoped. He was gulping down his bottle, so I gather he was otherwise occupied. We'll pull this one out again.

  • Time for Bed

This is another book I recall fondly from when Beetle was a baby. Tonight I read this Fritz. It is a wonderful story to read at bedtime. The rhyme is reminiscent of a lullaby and it naturally sets the gentle tone for sleep.

  • The Monster at the End of this Book
    • Rated 4 stars

Fritz received this yesterday as a belated birthday present. The inscription mentioned Fritz's cousins really liked this book when they were younger. When it was opened, Mommy commented it was a favorite of hers too.

Grover has always been a favorite of mine (along with Cookie, of course). Grover is cool, but a little wimpy.

We really like how this tale is told. Poor Grover is afraid of the monster we all know is coming at the end of the book. He pleads not to turn the pages. He does whatever he can to prevent the pages from being turned, but it is all to no avail.

One thing I noticed is that this book is full of adjectives. This would make for a good example book for my fourth grade students. Unlike many Sesame Street-themed books, this one is well-written.

I am sure this is going to be a book that finds itself in regular rotation.

    The Easter Chicken

    by Lisa Funari-Willever, Lorraine Funari
    • Rated 3 stars

Lisa Funari Willever was a guest author recently at the elementary school at which I teach. I was enamored with her storytelling. She mentioned this book, which I had not read. I ordered it.

It's funny. The premise is that a chicken feels she can do a better job delivering Easter eggs than a bunny can. After all, chickens lay eggs.

The story is told in rhyming couplets. That is good, but the length of the story wears a bit on the rhyming.

  • Guess How Much I Love You
    • Rated 3 stars

I used to read this to my daughter and now am reading it to my son. It seems like an odd story as the father hare always one-ups his son, even t the end. Why not just accept the baby hare's love without upstaging him?

Nevertheless, it is a good bedtime read aloud story. I really like the illustrations of Anita Jeram.
