Batona

I am a husband, father, teacher, blogger, and geocacher. I am a reader. I am again beginning to chronicle my books. Learning from past mistakes, I am taking it slowly.

Enjoy the process as I document the 1000+ books we have sitting around.

The reading levels I post for the books are taken from Follett. They aren't perfect,... more »

I love these creepy poems. They set the tone of Halloween very well. I have found, however, over time, my students struggle more and more with the language Prelutsky uses. While geared for sixth grade, my fourth graders used to be able to enjoy these. Unfortunately, I read them less and less each year as they do not understand the words.

I have used this a few times with my students. I have found other poetry to be more successful, but I do like the idea of multiple readers.

I read this with some of my colleagues in a stud group. There are some good ideas, but nothing groundbreaking here.

I met Wiesner at Borders in Marlton, NJ. He was signing his books. I purchased several signed copies and gave them as Christmas gifts in 1995. I kept one book for myself.

I first saw this book in Boston at Ali's house. Since then I have read it each year to my students at the end of the year. How inspirational!

In case it is not common sense, Trelease makes the case of why it is important to read aloud to children. This is one book that should be on every parent and teacher's bookshelf.

    A must read!

  • What Your Fourth Grader Needs to Know: Fundamentals of A Good Fourth-Grade Education (The Core Knowledge Series)
    • Rated 5 stars

I am a huge fan of Hirsch's work. A huge fan. I would welcome teaching in a district that adopted his curriculum.

As a fourth grade teacher, I use this book as a reference for stories, concepts, and skills my students should be familiar with. I do not use it to drive my instruction, but rather to complement it.

As my children grow, I anticipate using the other books in the series at home to ensure a well-rounded classical education for them.

The Mad Minute: A Race to Master the Number Facts

These are daily mathematics facts quizzes. The idea is that students should be able to complete a set of basic facts in a minute's time.

This book of worksheets is designed to six to eight weeks, depending on the level of students. In fourth grade we review addition and subtraction facts quickly and then spend considerable time on multiplication and division facts. Students usually accept the challenge of improving their score on these minute-quizzes.

The number of problems increase from 30 to 60. Most tests are of one specific operation, but there are some of mixed operations.

I have been using this book for years. It is an invaluable tool to get students knowing their basic mathematical facts.

This is a fun read! I have fond memories of reading this to Beetle when she was younger. Tonight was Fritz's turn. He was less receptive. As a matter of fact, he kept throwing his bottle at the book. I don't think he liked Daddy's singing.

Oh yes, singing. There is just no way to read this without busting out into song. It is a regular hoedown when we read this.

As with all of Boynton's books, this is a fun read.
