Batona

I am a husband, father, teacher, blogger, and geocacher. I am a reader. I am again beginning to chronicle my books. Learning from past mistakes, I am taking it slowly.

Enjoy the process as I document the 1000+ books we have sitting around.

The reading levels I post for the books are taken from Follett. They aren't perfect,... more »

  • My Big Animal Book (Priddy Bicknell Big Ideas for Little People)
    • Rated 3 stars

This is a neat picture book full of animals. Bright, colorful, and sharp, these photographs captured Fritz's attention. We highlighted the familiar animals and tried to have him point to the animal we named. It was slow going.

Fritz is much more comfortable holding books. He liked turning the pages.

  • Kitten's First Full Moon
    • Rated 4 stars

Books about kitties are always a favorite. Fritz and I were hanging out in Beetle's room this evening. He was a bit tired and Mommy was changing his sheets. This book was within reach. Fritz has matured with story time. He will sit and listen to a complete book. Afterward he even motioned to hold the book. He's coming along.

The story is wonderful. A little kitty seeks a bowl of milk, but the bowl she sees isn't within reach. Awwww . . . the little bundle of fur tumbles like a real kitty. We very much enjoyed the exploits.

The black and white drawings are very good and I can see why Henkes was awarded the Caldecott.

  • Weber's Big Book of Grilling
    • Rated 5 stars

This is one of two books that was recommended to me, a novice griller. I found this a helpful text to help me learn how to build a fire, prepare the foods, etc. I very much enjoyed this and recommend it to others in a similar situation.

  • How to Grill: The Complete Illustrated Book of Barbecue Techniques
    • Rated 5 stars

This is an excellent resource, particularly for the novice griller. Not only does Raichlen spell things out simply, the photographs show a step-by-step procedures. I have found this to be invaluable as I learn how to use my new kettle.

  • Emeril's Delmonico: A Restaurant with a Past
    • Rated 1 stars

I like Emeril. I really do. But I said to Gert several years ago that while his shtick is good, his food is not really based in a normal kitchen. This is not the first cookbook of his I have read. The story of Delmonico is interesting.

I was hopeful to find some good steak recipes to try on the kettle. Unfortunately, the number of ingredients and procedures was more than I wanted to delve into. I am certain if one has all these ingredients on hand regularly, one could produce these dishes with ease. For the rest of us, this is just a pretty cookbook.

  • Dr. Seuss's ABC
    • Rated 3 stars

Fritz is maturing. He now sits for reading time and pays some attention. :) Tonight I read him this book. We added some words for each letter to provide some extra practice on the beginning sounds.

He did not practice, but he followed along.

  • The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything
    • Rated 4 stars

Beetle requested this book this evening. It's been a long time since I read this. Despite it not being Halloween season, it is still a fun read. At four, Beetle was able to pick up the repetition and enjoyed it each time.

A little old lady goes for a walk and encounters various clothing. Humorously it all comes together. This is a fun story.

  • Born to Grill
    • Rated 4 stars

The Jamisons are knowledgeable folks about smoking and grilling. Based on their other book, I picked this one up. I like the background to grilling they provide. As I round out my skills, it is nice to read how the experts approach things. I felt they explained techniques very well and provided background as to why certain things are done the way they are. This was helpful to me.

It is pure grilling, no smoking in this book.

  • Bobby Flay's Grilling For Life: 75 Healthier Ideas for Big Flavor from the Fire
    • Rated 3 stars

I've been dubbed a Bobby Flay fan somehow. I like grilling and I have enjoyed a few of his recipes and Bobby Flay Steak, so I guess it fits. Anyhow, was looking for some good grilling tips and since there is a Weber kettle on the cover, thought I would give this a shot.

Eh! Apparently he wrote this to cash in on the healthy-eating craze and to demonstrate that healthy food could come from the family grill. Okay, but that isn't as interesting to me. :) There looks to be some decent recipes in here, although I have yet to try any. There was virtually nothing about how to grill.

The touch areas of this book are what interested my 16-month-old son. This book had been recommended and given to me by my sister a few years ago for my daughter. My daughter liked the book a lot too.

Fritz touched each area and was happy to go back and re-visit the pages.
