I am a husband, father, teacher, blogger, and geocacher. I am a reader. I am again beginning to chronicle my books. Learning from past mistakes, I am taking it slowly.

    Hi,
I just read your review of A Chair for My Mother. I, too, used that book when I was a classroom teacher, but it was in second grade with my more able readers. Vera B. Williams is a great author for young children. Another one of her books that I used in that reading group was Cherries and Cherry Pits. If you are familiar with it, you may recall how the child in the book draws pictures to explain herself. She puts borders on her drawings. This border idea really caught the attention of some of my students as some would often put borders around drawings or poems or letters or compostions that they wrote. I love how as a teacher, you can see the influence that an author has on your students. (BTW, I taught fourth grade for seven years and loved it. I went out on maternity leave and when I returned seven years later, I taught second grader for the remainder of my career. I loved both levels and miss relating to students now that I am retired and only work very part time as a home school advisory teacher.)
