I'm a lifelong reader. I remember as a kid, going to the Golden Gate branch of the San Francisco Library once a week, getting 6 books, and walking home with them. I loved anything about animals, and as I got older, books about growing up and making life decisions.

Now I read anything and everything, but I love crime novels like... more »

Jim is a friend of mine. He spent every afternoon with Lucy in the last year of her life, playing backgammon. In this book he recounts the stories she told him during that time.

One of the best books about love and friendship ever written. I dare anybody to read it to a child without choking up at some point. I give this book to everybody for whom I have strong feelings.

I read this a long time ago, when I was still a young person and I loved it.

I enjoyed this book, but wouldn't call it a "great" book. It did give an excellent look into the life of a geisha -- quite different from what many westerners have been led to believe.

I hate to disagree with most of the reviewers here, but I had read all of Patricia Cornwell's books up to this point and eagerly purchased it to read on a 36 hour plane ride from Australia to California.

This is without a doubt the very WORST of the series. It's all over the place and I hate the whole concept of this internationa conspiracy to get Kay Scapetta. I hate the direction she has taken Marino and Lucy. The whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Anne Geddes. Celine Dion. Babies. How can this NOT be a 5-star book (and it comes with a CD too!)

Damn. I knew I shouldn't have read this book. This is #2 in Patterson's Maximum Ride trilogy and you come to the end and it just. stops. You have to go and get book 3 to know what the hell the whole thing was about in the first place! This is another page-turner, but too much fighting for my taste. If it weren't that I had invested time in reading the first two, I probably wouldn't read #3, but now I have to.

  • Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters
    • Rated 5 stars

Anyone who has read "East of Eden" and loved it should get this book, then get "East of Eden" again and read the two at the same time. Journal of a Novel is a collection of letters Steinbeck wrote to his publisher, Pascal Covici, while he was writing the story and reading what was gone in his mind only enhances the enjoyment of the story itself.

My favorite of Steinbeck's books. I read it in high school for the story; I read it as an adult for the beauty of the writing. I can never drive down Highway 101 between the Coast Range and the Gabalon Mountains without thinking of how beautifully Steinbeck describes them.

This is one of my all-time favorite books, and who would think that we'd say that about a book of etymology. The story of our language is absolutely fantastic, and Bryson is the man to make it entertaining. Heck, Bryson could make an interesting read out of the phone book.
