"This was but a prelude;
where books are burnt
human-beings will be burnt
in the end"
German poet Heinrich Heine, 1820

"It was a pleasure to burn."--Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."--Groucho... more »

    I've driven (okay pun intended) people unfortunate enough to be in my life absolutely crazy quoting this book. It was full of surprises for me as I am sure it will be for anyone who is a driver, passenger, pedestrian, bicyclist, truck driver....no matter where you live and how you choose to get from Point A to Point B, you'll find something of interest in here. Not just a sociology study full of boring statistics but humorous too (Ch. 9 is entitled "Why You Shouldn't Drive with a Beer-Drinking Divorced Doctor Named Fred on Super Bowl Sunday in a Pickup Truck in Rural Montana: What's Risky on the Road and Why." I definitely look at traffic differently now from a safety standpoint and I bet you will too--the very things put in place/invented to protect us are oftentimes causing more harm. Check it out!

    The first King book I read that didn't do 'It' for me, the main problem being that it was too long and drawn out to effectively terrorize me as previous works did.

    Yet another of my childhood literary heroines--I was so envious of Pippi's adventures and vowed to have some of my own one day (and I have!)

  • the Art of Carl Faberge

    This is a wonderful out of print book that my uncle picked up for me during a time that I was absolutely obsessed with Faberge art, specifically the eggs. I had the privelege of seeing one of the largest collections of them at a museum and was Faberge-mad. A forward is written by Faberge's son and the previous book owner had inserted newspaper articles regarding the eggs and some beautiful color pics too. One of my prized books.

    Concentration camp Dachau, 1933-1945

    by Barbara Distel, Ruth Jakusch

    I purchased this book upon visiting the concentration camp itself. I wanted a reminder of the sickening sights I saw that day even though I wanted with all my might to forget them at the same time. I occasionally look at this book and think about the freedom I have in this country, and about those who are still suffering from persecution and genocide even now. This book is primarily a collection of pictures, letters and articles that were from both perspectives--Nazi and prisoner.

    This was a gift from my uncle after we had a discussion about how I didn't understand/like Picasso, especially his Blue Period. It actually helped me understand Picasso as an artist a little more, though I'm still not a big Picasso fan.

  • The Yoga Tradition: Its History, Literature, Philosophy and Practice

    I received this book as a birthday gift from someone whom I respect and admire greatly--that alone will keep it in my library forever. This is a comprehensive look at the history and origin of yoga.

    I just can't say anything bad about Atwood. This book, like Fahrenheit 451, is a stop into the future that is seriously scary.

    The only way I will let this book go is to give it to my son to read to his child someday. This was a nightly reading ritual with him for so long before it finally went into bedtime rotation. I could still pull it out today and have the tears well up as I read it.
