Growing up I did everything I could NOT to read; I thought it was terribly boring. I also had difficulty retaining what I read, so it just wasn't a fun activity. Then I found "chicklit" books and I started reading like crazy. My favorites are mysteries, but I try to read 5-7 high school reading books a year, and I'm now puzzles as to why I... more »

How's your 50 book challenge going, Barbara Ann? I'm behind schedule, so I bet you've passed me up by now!

It's so good that you did your research on that book; you won't be disappointed. Yes, Jamie is in all of the books. Sometime, I'll tell you of the (it's long) online group I saw involving Gabaldon - and her talk about Jamie. Cute.
You've gone further into Grafton's alphabet series than I have - I still have to read from N on. But it's fun to see what we've read in common. Some of those books are so great --- The Help, The Kiterunner, --- I could go on and on.......

Yes, this is THE MONTH in Florida, when all the tourists come - (am I one of them, living here only 6 months???). But boy, this state needs their money, so I guess it's a good thing.

I just noticed that you enjoyed Outlander - and it's such a large book! That one's one of my favorites and I love to find someone who loves the story, too. And Jamie -- oh, Jamie! This old heart goes wild for that type of man. Anyway - if you do decide to read the second one, realize that there have been 20 years since the end of Outlander. That's how the story starts out - it put off one of the Shelfari readers, that's the only reason I'm mentioning it. I was fine with it - but I often wait a long time in between book 1 and book 2 etc. of a series. It's just as large as the first one - I don't know how an author gets all the ideas, but all the books in this series are about 900 pages!

Thanks for the friend request, Barbara Ann. I'm in Lady Lake, near The Villages, central part of the state. I live in a mobile home (single wide) in a wonderful park (not glorious to look at but cute) with about 400 units. The snobirds are mostly mid-westerners (MI, OH), some really nice Canadians - many with such a wonderful Christian attitude (and I'm NOT a religious person) that makes my heart glad. I've been here 15 years, since I lost my husband.

Just about that long ago I visited Sarasota for 10 days; my younger sister (now in her 70s) stayed on Lido Key for 4 months. Lovely area; I want to visit the Ringling Bros. Museum there.

    Hi Barbara Ann,

Thank you for the friend request.
Just done shoveling much snow here.
    ------------

About canning...my husband and I work together
This yr we did peaches, salsa, 4 types of jam, apple butter...
and I dry many apples with cinnamon for snacks.
    ---------
I use Pgh because people would not understand small town....
This they can place..east of Pgh if they ask more.

Actually my home town is your home town.
I was shocked to see someone here from my hometown.
In fact, I was shoveling and had an audio book tucked away in my
    Latrobe sweatshirt.
    -----------
If you read my profile...you'll see I'm a caregiver, in my home, for my elderly mom.
I also took early retirement at the end of Sept.
My husband and I both love gardening. He veggie and me veggie and flower.
    ----------
    Winter can be tiring here....
but you can't beat spring, summer and fall.

    Happy reading,
    Bev

You are so right about our styles! I have hit a huge brick wall with my reading. I was full-steam ahead for so many months, but (it may be the bustle of the holidays) I seem to have lost my fervor. I have read 48 books so far, and my husband tells me that I should press on so I will not be disappointed with my efforts come the end of the year. He is right, of course; and, I think I will finish the year with a few hearty young adult books (maybe finish the Hunger Games trilogy). Still reading, but not looking up words or taking notes every other page. I will have to sift through my bulging TBR pile where there are sure to be more than enough from which to choose!

What are you going to read the next few weeks?

I had to put it down for a bit, I'm sorry to say. It's not a difficult read, but I just couldn't get into it. I have a goal for myself of 52 books this year, so I put this one aside for another one that will grab me, in order to meet my goal. I will read it, though!

I just got a Nook, and have been very disappointed in the eBooks avail from my local library. I am a library girl, as oppsed to a buyer of books. I currently have three books on my "reading now" list, which means that I have that many from the library. "Ashes of Roses", a novel about the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in NYC. Next in line is "Cold Sassy Tree". I just finished "Fluke", which was a weirdly funny little read. I have chosen well so far this summer, which is a time that I want easy, breezy books to read. I will have to look at "The Tenth Gift". Usually you steer me in a good direction.

I believe it was "Tallgrass". My little notation above my shelf said, "You are behind your pace." How motivating that was! I am now ahead of my pace. Darn competitive nature! How is your reading this year?
