Oh, "New York Stories" is good. "TBA" is fascinating, I think flawed, but still worth it. "Amsterdam" I didn't think was the all that and the bag of chips that some think. I found it kind of smug & pretentious, forced & slight, although he is an undeniably elegant writer. Overall lazy, (for me) but some ate it up.

Yes, just in case, wait till you've seen all of Season One before starting the book, but then again, who knows, maybe the book is a springboard and the show goes off in a different direction, once the characters are established. But just in case, by all means - finish one first. Otherwise, it might feel distracting.

"Glee" is such fun! I saw that pilot, and yes, the girl from "Spring Awakening" (which I saw twice) is in it - Lea Michelle. Also Matt Morrison, who was lovely in "The Light in the Piazza" (which was a totally gorge musical). Also, Jane Lynch, who I will watch do anything.

I have stayed off the computer for Three Whole Days (wow) in order to live life, or something like it, the MacBook is a highly addictive toy, is it not? We must pace ourselves. I don't know if I will be able to wait to get my mitts on P &P&Z. It looks so potentially fun...

Zombie-themed birthday! Excellent. Funny t-shirt, ha-ha! You could also get her "The Zombies" greatest hits on CD, classic Rock band, they are the "Time of the Season" people...

Nah, it ain't bad; you'll be gentle, she'll never know..(nice gift!) I'm keeping an eye out for it among my thrifties; they seem to get recent titles within six months of original release (that's how I got my copy of "The Anglo Files", which is actually quite good) ...I admit I am very curious. It's #4 on the New York Times Best Seller in its category (Trade Paperbacks, I think) So you got "Dead Before Dark", (I think that's the first one) let me know what you think...sounds like a perfect beach read...

"True Blood" is so sexy! (and funny) This is good - you'll be all caught up in time for Season Two next month...(can you believe next month is already JUNE? I know say this every year, but this year is just zipping along!

Things were nice and quiet in NYC this weekend. I'm in the kind of area that clears out in the summer (to weekend houses, the Hamptons, etc. so this three-day weekend was lovely - no traffic, lots of room in local restaurants and no lines at the grocery store!

Lily Bart is frustrating. "Age of Innocence" is just a joy, and I thought Scorsese did a fine job with it as a film. But back to "House of Mirth" - I felt so bad for Lily, her own worst enemy, and I just felt such sympathy for her, even if i wanted to throttle her sometimes. Like having a dear friend who is a good person but who makes consistently dreadful choices, combined with having lousy luck...and Selden never steps up to the plate, either, until it's waaay too late. Very sad. A much more contemporary-set (and faster-paced) Wharton -maybe you'd like "Twilight Sleep?" It's set in the twenties, complete with lifestyle gurus and sleeping aids....

I haven't been online too much the past few days - felt like I needed a break...but I'm back!

I agree -- a fantastic series, excellent casting, with fresh plots and dialogue, and the final episode didn't try to wrap everything up too neatly. Check out Wikipedia for some news about the new cast, which will include Effy and Pandora.

By the way, Cassie was reading "The Edible Woman".

Ah, that's wonderful news about The Mount, so good to hear! I've been there twice - it's a nice part of the world.

Yes, Alan Ball is so talented. I loved "Six Feet Under".

I think my first Wharton was "The Age of Innocence" We love her...

"True Blood" is excellent - I love this show - it is a fresh combination of sexy, funny, gory, and stylishly neo-gothically atmospheric, not ashamed to be truly intense and gothic. It rocks & I love the theme song - and that men are just as likely to be naked in it as women - it's about time... *I wanna do bad things with you...*

Congrats on book score! Always a good thing - makes one skip, tra la...would you like a free copy of "The House of Mirth" - Edith Wharton? (I have an extra) Let me know...

I hope it's not hyper-edited the way "Chicago" was - to hide any dancing weaknesses of its leading ladies - on the old days you held shots, not so choppy, and for me choppy editing and all those quick cuts diminishes the impact of a great number if it's excessive.

What have you heard - in saying no one wants to do a film with AB - or you just don't like him? I think he's been good in what I've seen him do so far - he made sitting through "Evita" bearable. I know DDL is great, but this is a musical, and I'm just wondering about his ability to pull certain aspects of that off. I mean I wouldn't want a young Lawrence Olivier to do "West Side Story", either, but we'll just have to wait and see...I admit I'm intrigued...

Oh, the music from "Nine" is simply wonderful, it's one of my most favorite scores ever - the only thing is, I don't understand why the producers of this movie version didn't get Antonio Banderas to play Guido - he did a lovely job of it in the revival on Broadway several years back - and instead it's Daniel Day Lewis - who I think is a terrific actor - but as Guido?? I don't get it! (I don't even know if he can sing, but I guess we'll all find out) when a juicy Antonio would have been perfect! I'm VERY much looking forward to seeing it, regardless...do you know when it's opening? Is it for Christmas '09 or sooner?

I just found the trailer - very sexy, yes? Be Italian! Ah - November, 09. Cool....

I love EEH! He's in several of the Astaire/Rogers films, and also he narrated the cartoons "Fractured Fairy Tales" for the old Bullwinkle show. Do you know of Bullwinkle? I guess for me it's TPS.

Ha-ha - Always Be Canceling. Finks. Jeez - not till June? Thanks for info. Boy, when they give up on a show, they really give up. Too bad.

Oh, "Holiday" is glorious. It's a good day.

I love those stately older libraries and all the wood paneling, wooden bannisters. That was my childhood one. I've been told it's still standing - I really want to go up to the old nabe and see it again, probably everything will look so much smaller.

In that building the childrens's section was upstairs. I am sure nothing has been updated, or rather, I hope so, all that lovely late 19th century woodwork. Must go looks and report back...

Yes, you are forever Charlotte. Which reminds me, is there going to be a finale episode broadcast of "Pushing Daisies" - for later in May? Do you know anything about it? Such a durn pity.

Ah, Kate is "Lion in Winter"-ing now. It's been a nice fifteen years with TCM....I hope they are there forever and eve and ever...

Oh, I totally believe in Karma. I'm far from perfect, but I try not to add misery to the world. I'm one of those goody-goodys that gets taxis for old ladies. Ideally they want the taxi, but that's another story...I figure that's me in five years, so I'd better make serious depisits int he Karma bank! Isn't it amazing the people who are just miserable? They love their misery and water it every day. Blecch. Either they are really in need of professional help ( and should go get it, nothing wrong with that) or it's people who want attention. But it's hard to tune out a co-worker.

I could watch "The Philadephia Story" every day indefinitely...right now TCM does this "on demand" feature, and I've been watching "Georgy Girl" over and over. Because I can!

Wowee - the Public Library giving away books! Sweetie would die if ours did that - we grow extra books in this place like kudzu as it is!

We just got brand spanking-new library cards which also give us access to the research libraries. One of the many gems of the NYPL system is the Lincoln Center Library Branch, which has a staggering Performing Arts collection, including probably the biggest Dance archive in the country, if not the world. Anyway, you can sit and watch any theatre piece that was filmed for the archives. It's an amazing collection. I love libraries.

Abe Vigoda sighting!!! He's still alive - yay! I saw him today on the Crosstown bus - I got on at 72nd and Third Avenue, Westbound. He was sitting in the very back, alone, on a cell phone. I feel so much better now.

Well, THAT was an unexpected way to end the season! I agree, Chris and Angie may have the most interesting story arc in Season 2, but I'd like to see Sid and Cassie have some sort of a normal relationship. We'll have disc 1 tomorrow, so not long to wait.

If you mean who is the young actress in "Next to Normal" it's Jennifer Damiano - here is official site for show -

    http://www.nexttonormal.com/

It has really stayed with me. It's not a fluffy show - it's meaningful, eloquent, angry, funny (about a mentally ill mother, her journey to get better, and what it does to her family) and doesn't have all the answers by the end tied in a neat little bow, but yet there is hope. I don't want to say too much. I wish you could see it. It's not lightweight stupid or campy. It has a huge heart, is complicated, and has funny bits. It it REALLY good.

    Thank you!

Tomorrow's the big day - the Tonys get announced tomorrow at Sardi's at dawn, or actually 8:30 a.m., but that's dawn to me...I'm sure the phone will be ringing early here with industry folks who want to bîtch/opine/gloat/cry about the nommies. Some very good perfs will get left off this year, there are only so many slots, so there is bound to be much anguish later tomorrow. "Billy Elliott" will do very well in the musicals category, (and it deserves to) but I predict "Next To Normal" will also get many nommies. It's a very brave & moving show, and Alice Ripley will be nominated for her performance in it. I wish there was the category for best Ensemble for Tony awards, because all six performers in this show are great. Terrific score, too. Angela is as sure as it gets to a lock for "Blithe Spirit" and she show "Blithe Spirit" will probably also get a nommie for Best Revival...we shall see...we still have a lot of shows to see! A whole bunch open right before the cutoff in order to qualify, so May is a bit nuts with industry people scrambling to see things. Maybe I'll unhook the phone...

We already know about the honorary Tony awards this year, (announced today, lifetime achievement types) and one of them is going to a terrific theatre press agent, one Shirley Herz, who is a eighty-something class act and absolutely deserves the recognition. Press chicks rule!! She's a doll, and that's one phone call I'll be happy to make tomorrow...it's a HUGE day, because then all the ad agencies that represent all the shows will start putting together their Tony nomination ads, that will now tout the shows afresh, and their nominations, just like you see when the Oscars nommies are announced...I also predict that the girl in "Next to Normal" that plays Alice Ripley's daughter will also get a nommie, she was in the original ast of "Sprig Awakening" - kinda exciting!
