“I probably expected too much out of this book when I picked it up. I fell in love with Salinger after reading Nine Stories. Catcher, on the other hand, is just great.
Probably my favorite aspect of reading Catcher was the evolution of my opinions toward Mister Caulfield. At first, he's this tough guy. He gets under your skin a little bit and you say, "ok, tough guy. Which quippy comeback is next?" But he continues to show more character: just an awkward, cerebral teenager. Sometimes naive, other times deep; more insightful than he realizes. I actually came to pity the guy at different points.
Overall, I really dug this book. Salinger confessing that this was 'somewhat autobiographical' just makes it all the more satisfying. I'll pick it up again in a couple years.”
