there are the Souls, they originated from The Origin. They wanted to take over so they capture humans and insert the silver, spider like souls into the human hosts. (on a side note, this makes me wonder how did the first insertion occur?) The souls can see the Host's memories, but the Host usually dies out. But Wanderer's, Melanie, didn't. Melanie is strong and her Soul doesn't want other Souls to find out that she can't control her Host and make her go away, so she runs. She goes where Melanie takes her and they end up finding the humans that Melanie was with before she was caught. Mel and Wanda (as they call her in the caves) become best friends, constantly talking to each other. The humans don't kill Wanda and she slowly earns their trust. Wanda is in love with Ian, but Jaime is Melanie's love and both are in the Caves. Mel's Uncle Jeb has found these caves and can grow some crops and it has a bathing area and everything. The group does have to go on raids to get supplies every so often. Wanda becomes more and more like a human. She divulgdes information to the humans and after seeing them chop up souls, she finally tells them how to remove the souls from the Hosts, with out damaging either of them, but unsure if the Hosts would come around or not. She also knew that she, Wanda, would also have to go, to give Mel herself back. Wanda had finally found a planet she felt at home on and didn't want to be sent to another one, so Doc promised her that he would bury her with the other two dead, without telling the others. However, Jared followed her and convinced Doc to save her and that they would find another body for her. They needed her, since she could go among the other Souls and get whatever they needed. She awoke in another body, stayed in love with Ian and vice versa and went out on raids with the group. on the last raid in the book, they realize they've walked into a trap. However, the group they meet is also human and Wanda realizes she is the one who is in trouble here, until a person from the other group comes over and shakes her hand and says that "it was ok, because they had one too." They agreed it was a strange world and Wanda told him that they weren't the only rouge souls (since Sunny was still a soul in a Host body that wouldn't wake up on it's own.).
Usually I hate books with ambiguous endings, but I really liked this one because I feel everthing was going to continue in a positive manner. I did find it odd that through the book I didn't think that there could possibly be another human group. After the fact it seems very likely, but the way the book was written it was like she wanted you to belileve that the Cave held the only humans left. ”
