    Second Bounce of the Ball

A very interesting read. The author of this book is himself a self made entrepreneur who started the private equity firm Apax. The book is written from his personal experiences and hence has a personal touch to it which makes it more readable. Its quite well organized.

One thing I didn't like about this book is its digressive nature. The author does articulate his points quite clearly at the beginning of each chapter but then overstates the point by presenting way too many examples, to the point of sounding bombastic.

    Overall a good read.

The whole Ramayana series by Ashok K. Banker is a modern Indian classic. Its a fantastic rewrite of the original Ramayana. It takes a completely different interpretation from the original epic, that of a common man, that a citizen of the 20th century can understand, accept and admire. I don't think I have met a single Indian bought up on the deeds of Rama, told by parents and grand parents alike, who does not admire the virtue and moral learnings of this epic. However the religious and superstitiousness associated with the tellings results in skepticism and loss of those learnings at some point during our sojourn into the real world. By bringing logic and a more humanistic to the same stories, Ashok Banker has rekindled the moralities, ethicism and values that the stories were meant to impart and imbibe. Prince of Ayodhya is the first book of this series. It introduces us to Rama the soon to great warrior and the greates of men to ever have lived. The first book takes us through the initial events that transformed Rama from a boy to a warrior and a man.

Being an engineer and a researcher an analytical approach to a problem always appeals to me. This particular book is a beautiful and simple depiction of the power of data and the insights one can gain to reason the workings of the world. Steven D. Levitt presents his reasoning for simple yet untractable questions as to how corrupt is the human race ? What is common between the ku klux clan and real estate agents ? On the surface these questions seem quite meaningless but after reading the analysis you can see how all this simple questions unfold the workings of a very complex world.

A beautiful depiction of post independence India. The description is detailed and gives beautiful insights into the mind set of the common man in post independent India. The book gives a small window to view the causes that have led to the current modern day Indian society and in particular Indian politics.

A philosophical approach to life, "If you have a dream go for it, since you wouldn't have had the dream if you didn't have something in you that could achieve it". This philosophy is rendered through a beautiful story about a man and how he follows a dreams and achieves the cornucopia of his life. At every stage he faces hardships that makes his goal absurd and seemingly illogical to follow but the right path turns out to be moving on since there is nothing left by giving up.
