Nevil Shute (Norway) wrote two of my favorite books: A Town Like Alice and On the Beach.
Although he and his family didn't move to Australia until the '50s, both books are set there. Both books were made into movies and in On the Beach the character most like Shute himself was played by Fred Astaire.
