Ms. Mills was the long-term editor of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, immediate past president of the ASG, past president and trustee of the BCG, and a founding member of the GSG. She has previously served as an NGS national conference chair, NGS councilor, APG trustee, and founder/editor of the BCG educational newsletter, OnBoard. Mills has delivered over 500 lectures nationally and internationally, has appeared on radio and TV talk shows on three continents, and was featured on the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation)'s 20th anniversary special on the novel Roots and the PBS-KBYU series Ancestors: Second Season.
She has served on the faculty of Samford University Library's Institute <of Genealogy and Historical Research> since 1979, where she developed the ground-breaking Advanced Methodology Course, and served for 13 years on the NIGR faculty. A recipient of the NGS President's Citation and the APG Graham T. Smallwood Jr. Award, Elizabeth has been cited by her peers as "the genealogist who has had the greatest impact on American genealogy in the post-Roots era."
Two of Elizabeth’s twelve books are considered "classics" and "essentials" to the field of genealogy: Evidence! Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian (Baltimore: GPC, 1997) and Professional Genealogy: A Manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers, and Librarians (Baltimore: GPC, 2001). She is more recently the author of Isle of Canes (Provo: Ancestry, 2005), a historical saga of a Creole family based on her three decades of research across four continents, and QuickSheet: Citing Online Historical Resources, Evidence! Style. Her definitive work on citations, Evidence Expanded: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace is scheduled for release in 2007.
