He is the son of second generation Jewish Australians of East European descent. Elliot Perlman studied law at Monash University, graduating in 1989. He was called to the Bar in 1997, and it was while working as a barrister, that he started writing short stories. He currently lives in Melbourne, Australia.
One of his books, "Three Dollars" was made into a movie in 2005. It was directed by Robert Connolly, and starred David Wenham and Frances O'Connor.
Elliot Perlman said he once met a reader who waited for him with flowers in her car outside his house. The relationship didn't last but he must be a fairly friendly guy to have greeted her at all. =)
