James William Buffett grew up at 4623 North Sunset Drive in Mobile, Alabama. He graduated high school from McGill Institute for Boys in 1964. He started playing guitar while attending Auburn University in Alabama and began his musical career during the late 1960's.
In 1985, Buffett opened the first of the "Margaritaville" resturants in Key West.
