This author is deaf. He lost his hearing at age 12 but speaks well and does a great job of reading lips. With the help of a hearing aid, he has been a Distinguished Professor; he taught art history for decades. In his fiction he duplicates sounds wonderfully. He has written many novels, has never had a best seller, but has been critically acclaimed, winning numerous awards. One issue of Entertainment Weekly called him "the greatest unknown author."
