After studying at art school John Schoenherr graduated with a B.F.A. Becoming a free lance artist he found a niche in illustrating Science Fiction Magazines, Amazing Stories, Fantastic and particularly Analog. He developed a distinctive recognisable style often working on scratchboard producing intricate stark black and white prints, ideally suited to the interior illustrations accompanying the stories. In contrast the paintings he produced for the covers would be detailed dreamlike alien landscapes.
Schoenherr had an eye for geological forms and for animals both of which he put to use in the otherworld illustrations he became famous for. In particular the illustrations for Dune World and
Prophet of Dune which appeared between 1963 and 1965 in serialised form, winning him a Hugo award in 1965. Frank Herbert said of him " He is the only man who has visited Dune".
He continued to produce illustrations through out the 60's and 70's for magazines and book covers but eventually tired of the SF genre work.
He also illustrated childrens books mainly focusing on wildlife. Notable examples being "The Barn", "Golden Eagle", "TheWounded Wolf ".
Many of his wildlife paintings are in private collections.
