Adlard Coles was the author of several boating books, most notably "Heavy Weather Sailing".

He won the Transatlantic Race of 1950, and was twice class winner of the Fastnet Race, reputed to be the hardest in the world. He was elected Yachtsman of the Year after the exceptionally heavy weather of the Fastnet Race in 1957.

Adlard Coles also won the Points Championship of the Royal Ocean Racing Club three times. His books are written with authority and specialized knowledge of long-distance cruising and ocean racing on both sides of the Atlantic. (exerts taken from dust jacket of Heavy Weather Sailing 1981 ed.)
