James Autry is the author of ten published books, the most recent (2007) of which is Looking Around for God. In this highly personal book he considers his unique life of faith and belief in a God often clouded by church convention.
In 2006 he published his ninth book, The Book of Hard Choices, which he co-authored with Peter Roy. The Book of Hard Choices is a new approach to the subject of integrity that covers integrity in an easy-to-read manner, demonstrating through practical examples the positive and negative consequences of difficult business decisions that leave your integrity on the line.
His eighth book was The Spirit of Retirement a guide to creating and sustaining the post-work life you have always envisioned.
His previous book was The Servant Leader. This book helps to explain the idea behind servant leadership as well as giving concrete explanations of servant leadership in action. It shows you how to remain true to the servant leadership model when handling day-to-day and long-term management situations.
His sixth book was Real Power: Business Lessons from the Tao Te Ching. In this unusual and exciting collaboration, Mr. Autry has worked with well-known poet and translator Stephen Mitchell in a business leadership interpretation of Mr. Mitchell's best-selling translation of the Tao Te Ching of Lao-tzu.
Confessions of an Accidental Businessman, Mr. Autry's previous book, was a collection of his business memoirs and it was one of the five finalists in the 1996 Financial Times/Booze, Allen & Hamilton Global Business Book Award. In October of 1996 Confessions received a lengthy and quite favorable review in USA TODAY's Money bookshelf.
His second book on management, Life and Work: A Manager’s Search for Meaning, was published in March 1994 and is more or less a sequel to Love and Profit. The first in his series of business related books was the well-known Love and Profit: The Art of Caring Leadership which also has been published in Japanese, Swedish, Chinese, Spanish and Russian. Love and Profit won the prestigious Johnson, Smith & Knisely Award as the book which had the most impact on executive thinking in 1992. Real Power, Love and Profit and Life and Work are available in paperback. In addition, Autry has written the introductions to several books, and his writings have appeared in many anthologies and magazines.
His first two books were books of poetry, Nights Under a Tin Roof and Life After Mississippi. In late 1991, the Kentucky Poetry Review published a special James A. Autry issue. He received considerable national attention when he was one of the poets featured on Bill Moyers’ special series, “The Power of the Word,” on PBS. He is also featured in three videos, “Love and Profit” --winner of a "Telly" award-- “Life and Work”, and his latest video, "Spirit At Work", which was released in the summer of 2001.
