Algernon Blackwood (edit name/settings)

Algernon Blackwood was born in 1869, educated at the Moravian School in the Black Forest, at Wellington College, and Edinburgh University. His early life was adventurous and varied, and included farming in Canada, prospecting for gold, and conducting a hotel. Finally he drifted into journalism, becoming a reporter on the staff of the New York Sun, and subsequently of the New York Times. It was not until 1906, at the age of thirty-seven, that he published his first book, "The Empty House," a collection of short stories. The rest of his life he devoted entirely to writing, and amongst his many titles were : John Silence(1908), The Centaur(1911), Incredible Adventures(1914), and, perhaps the best known, Tales of the Uncanny and Supernatural(1949).

Algernon Blackwood spent much of his time abroad but was well known to listeners on the radio, where he had a considerable public. He died in 1951.
