Betsy Byars is an award winning children's author. She won the Newberry Medal in 1971 for her novel Summer of the Swans. In 1980 she received a National Book Award for The Night Swimmers. Wanted...Mud Blossom won an Edgar Award in 1991.

Born Betsy Cromer August 7, 1928, in Charlotte, North Carolina, she graduated from Queens College in Charlotte in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in English. She married Ed Byars in 1950. They have 4 children. Daughters Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers are also children's authors, and the three of them have written three books together: My Dog, My Hero (2000), The SOS File (2004) and Dog Diaries (2007).
