Loree’s first career was as a research scientist (she holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry), and so it is not surprising that her writing celebrates the natural world and the people who study it. Her first two books, Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion (Houghton Mifflin, 2007) and The Hive Detectives: Chronicle of a Honey Bee Catastrophe (Houghton Mifflin, 2010) garnered several honors, including ALA Notable designations, a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Award, an IRA Children’s Book Award and an SB&F Prize. Her next book, an introduction to and celebration of citizen science, will be published by Henry Holt in 2012.
