Though her first collection of single panel cartoons, David, We're Pregnant, was
published in 1973, to be followed by its 1975 sequel, Hi Mom! Hi Dad!, Lynn Johnston
is best known as the creator of the beloved strip, For Better or For Worse.
Beginning in 1979, the strip chronicles the lives and times of Elly and John Patterson,
their children, Michael, Elizabeth, and April, along with their extended family, in-laws,
friends and various pets. A singular feature of FBoFW is that the characters age in
"real time" (with the exception of the first two years of the series), though this is
set to change in 2008. Many of the stories are drawn from Johnston's real life, though
when she wanted another child, she created one, April, in the strip.
