Longtime professor of English at Weber State University, his novel The Backslider set the standard for the contemporary Mormon novel. Also wrote the seminal biography Juanita Brooks: Mormon Woman Historian and his own autobiography, A Rascal by Nature, A Christian by Yearning. Editor of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought (2004-08).
