David Loades was born in Cambridge, England in 1934 and was educated at the Perse School and Emmanuel College. He taught at St Andrews and Durham universities before moving to the Chair of History at the University of Wales, Bangor. He is presently Honorary Research Professor at the University of Sheffield, having been the first Directory and the Literary Director of the British Academy John Foxe Project based in the Humanities Research Institute of that university. He has edited conference proceedings on Foxe Colloquia and among his many other publications in print are Mary Tudor: a life (1989); Henry VIII and his Queens (1994); Essays on the Reign of Edward VI (1994); Elizabeth I (2003); and The Tudor Court (1986 and 2009).
