James Michener was brought up in a small Pennsylvania town,  in a foster home. He hitchhiked around the country beginning at the age of thirteen. He graduated from Swarthmore College. Michener was a Quaker but enlisted in the Navy at 36 years old. He was a naval officer during WWII. He published his first book at the age of forty (Tales of the South Pacific) and won a Pulitzer Prize.
