Hi Folks...apparently I'm the first to post to this discussion board unless I'm mistaken. Regardless, my interest in Dickinson is mostly at the level of language. I'm curious whether she should be considered the first modernist poet in regards to her self-conscious subversive and riddle-like verse. Her poems seem too familiar to a post-modernist sensibility and each one is conscious that language is a fallible and inexhaustible system of intricate and infinite meaning. David Porter seems among the first to mention Dickinson as a major modernist poet and others have examined and re-examined her odd and brilliant use of language, but none have declared her the *first* to use modernist language. I imagine we may first need to define what a modernist poem is, but I'm open to anything.
