Leonard James Arrington was one of the most significant historians of Mormonism, helping to establish the more academic New Mormon History movement. An academically trained economic historian, he was founding president of the Mormon History Association and professor of history at Utah State University and Brigham Young University. He was official church historian of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1972 to 1982, and remains the sole professional historian to ever hold that position, which has otherwise been held by General Authorities of the Church since the 1840s.
Arrington was a prolific author of books and scholarly articles. His most noted books have been Great Basin Kingdom, Building the City of God, The Mormon Experience, and Brigham Young: American Moses.
