Beryl Bainbridge was born in Liverpool in 1934 and was educated at the Merchant Taylors School in Crosby. She was an actress before she began to write. She is the author of fourteen novels, two works of non-fiction and five television plays. A collection of her short stories has also been published. She writes a weekly column for the Evening Standard. Beryl Bainbridge is divorced with three grown-up children and two grandchildren. (from the Penguin 1992 edition of "The Bottle Factory Outing")
