Joan Lowery Nixon was first published in a children's magazine at the age of 10 and was first paid for her writing at the age of 17 by an article published in a magazine.  After getting a degree in journalism she taught kindergarten and first grade due to a lack of journalism jobs.  Her first book was published in 1964.
