James Tiptree Jr. was the pseudonym of Alice Bradley Sheldon from 1967 to her death; it was not known publicly that Tiptree was a woman until 1977. She also occasionally wrote under the pseudonym Racoona Sheldon.

Known primarily for her short stories and novellas, Tiptree won several major awards in the science fiction and fantasy fields, including:
