William Hardy McNeill was educated at the University of Chicago, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1938, and Master of Arts in 1939. He obtained his PhD at Cornell University in 1947. He was Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Chicago from 1947 until his retirement. McNeill is a recipient of the 2009 National Humanities Medal, awarded on February 25, 2010 at a White House ceremony.
