Elizabeth Mackintosh used the pseudonyms Josephine Tey and Gordon Daviot.  She trained at the Anstey Physical Training College in Birmingham, England for three years.  For eight years she earned her living as a physical training instructor.  In the mid 1920s she resigned as a teacher to care for her invalid father and to pursue writing.   Using the pseudonym Gordon Daviot, her first detective novel The Man in the Queue was published in 1929.  Her first play Richard of Bordeaux was accepted for production in 1932.
