After leaving school Eric Newby signed on as a seaman on one of the last windjammers hauling grain from Australis to Europe. In the Second world war he served in the Black Watch and The Special Boat Section (UK Special Forces). he was captured in Italy, escaped and was assisted by a Slovenian woman (Wanda) who he later married. They both travelled extensively after the war and he wrote about his past and his travels with Wanda.
