Mervyn Peake's father was a missionary doctor in China, and his mother had come to China as a missionary nurse. Mervyn was born in Kuling (Lushan) in Jiangxi Province of China in 1911, three months before the revolution and the founding of the Republic of China.
The family returned to England in 1914.
