A graduate of American University in Washington, DC, Ann Beattie started her professional career writing short stories for New Yorker magazine before moving on to publishing novels and collections of short stories. One of her most acclaimed books, Chilly Scenes of Winter, was made into a movie which drew rave reviews from critics. Ms. Beattie first started publishing stories in The New Yorker in the 1970s and is known as the Darling of American Short Fiction. She currently serves as the Edgar Allan Poe Chair of the Department of English and Creative Writing at The University of Virginia.
