He was a very educated man. His father only allowed reading as an entertainment. When he first gave his 18,000 word story The Red Badge of Courage to the newspaper, he got $90 ,which was alot in his time, and old vetran thought he actually went to war. He died at a young age of 29 because of malaria and tuberculosis.
